Sorensen learns judiciary fate, Des axes Titans star, Dragons half punted, Rabbitohs reshuffle

Dragons halfback Lachlan Ilias has paid the price for last Friday’s Anzac Day thrashing at the hands of the Roosters, with young gun Lyhkan King-Togia to replace him in the No.7 jersey at Magic Round.

Ilias has been below his best in recent weeks and had a shocker against the Roosters, with Shane Flanagan running out of patience with the former Rabbitohs playmaker heading into Saturday’s stoush with the Tigers at Suncorp Stadium.

King-Togia played the final four matches of last season with just one game in the starting side at five-eighth. His naming comes on the same day as the 19-year-old signed until the end of 2027, and is set to be upgraded to the club’s top-30 roster from next season.

“Locking down Lyhkan for another couple of seasons is exciting for the club,” coach Flanagan said of his re-signing.

“He got a taste of first grade at the end of last year and has been playing good footy to start this season for our NSW Cup team.

“He’s an exciting young half on the up and we’re looking forward to watching him continue to improve over the coming seasons.”

Illias wasn’t the only big name dropped by their coach, with Gold Coast’s David Fifita relegated to the reserves by Des Hasler, who is desperate to get a Titans win.

Wayne Bennett has unveiled a new halves combination, with Jack Wighton shifting to five-eighth to partner Jayden Sullivan. Lewis Dodd remains out of favour, and has been named on the reserves list.

Penrith have lost in their fight against the NRL’s crackdown on illegal shots at the judiciary with Tuesday night’s panel rejecting their plea to have Scott Sorensen’s two-game suspension downgraded.

Sorensen went to the sin bin for his shoulder charge on rampaging Manly forward Nathan Brown late in the first half of the round-eight loss that sent Penrith to the bottom of the ladder.

The second-rower was one of 18 players sin-binned on the weekend as the NRL took its tough stance on illegal contact to unprecedented heights.

On Sunday morning, the match review committee cited Sorensen for a grade-two shoulder charge but the New Zealand international tried to get a downgrade so he would only receive a $1500 fine.

But the ban remains and he will now serve three matches on the sidelines against Brisbane at Magic Round, North Queensland and Newcastle.

The Broncos have named Adam Reynolds, who is hopeful of shaking off the shoulder injury he suffered early in last Thursday’s win over Canterbury before aggravating it late in the contest.

He played through a staph infection in his leg to inspire a 42-18 win over Canterbury, even though he was unsure earlier in the day if he would play after a dizzy spell.

Sorensen’s Panthers teammates Dylan Edwards ($750 for tripping) and Casey McLean ($1000 for a high tackle) avoided a suspension, and co-captain Isaah Yeo was not charged by the match review committee despite being placed on report for a hit on Tom Trbojevic.

A trio of Bulldogs – Josh Curran, Sitili Tupouniua and Marcelo Montoya – were banned for offences in the loss to Brisbane.

Burton was hit with a Grade 2 careless high tackle charge to earn a two-week ban, which was downgraded to one with an early plea, while Curran received a three-match sanction for his Grade 2 shoulder charge.

Tupouniua was hardest hit, copping two suspensions for his twin acts – a three-game ban for his shoulder charge, and two more his lifting his knee into Brendan Piakura.

Titans front-rower Jaimin Jolliffe is out two weeks for a grade-two careless high tackle on Cowboys forward John Bateman while teammate Brock Gray has copped a one-game suspension in the same game he suffered an ACL injury.

Souths star Latrell Mitchell received another suspension for the high shot that led to him being sin-binned in South Sydney’s Anzac Day loss to the Melbourne Storm. The grade-two dangerous contact charge equates to a two-match ban that was reduced on Monday to one with an early plea.

Wests Tigers prop Fonua Pole, Cronulla second-rower Briton Nikora and Dolphins playmaker Kodi Nikorima can all accept fines for their grade-one offences.
