Baby colic item recalled over lack of evidence on its safety

A popular product purporting to help babies suffering from colic has been recalled and removed from the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.

In a recall notice issued last week, the Department of Health said BlissBaby, the makers of the product Lufti Colic Reliever, had failed to provide sufficient evidence to the Therapeutic Goods Administration for the safe use of their product.

Any potential harm or risk could not be ruled out and the devices were therefore being recalled, the department said. However, no adverse events associated with the product have been reported.

The Lufti Colic Reliever has been recalled because of a lack of evidence provided to the Therapeutic Goods Administration over its safety.

Anyone who has purchased the product is advised to not use it and seek a refund from BlissBaby.

According to the BlissBaby website, more than 50,000 of the Lufti Colic Reliever have been sold.

“These disposable colic relief catheters are designed to be inserted into the baby’s bottom to help release trapped gas. They may also help relieve bloating, indigestion, constipation, or excess wind,” the website states.

“The catheter features a soft, pliable, and rounded tip. It is made of baby-friendly material that is free from BPA and latex. The safety stopper ensures that the catheter won’t get inserted too far into your baby’s rectum.”

The item is unavailable on the website and is listed as “sold out”.
