Su’A clanger a candidate for worst bombed try in rugby league history

St George Illawarra forward Jaydn Su’A joined the lowlights reel of the worst bombed tries in premiership history with an unbelievable clanger against the Wests Tigers at Magic Round.

Su’A not only fumbled the ball as he dived over the line but Tigers fullback Jahream Bula collected the ball and sprinted 100-plus metres the other way in a cruel 12-point turnover for the Dragons on the stroke of half-time.

The Dragons were trailing 20-10 at the time but Bula’s length-of-the-field effort meant Wests headed into the Suncorp Stadium sheds with a 16-point lead when it should have been four.

Su’A was a dejected figure as he trudged back upfield and then off to the dressing rooms after his blunder put his team behind the eight ball when they could have been right back in the contest.

With the defensive line stretched, he had two unmarked teammates on his right but he dummied past the last defender, Adam Doueihi, and dived over the stripe but the ball came loose before he hit the ground.

Bula scooped it up and was untouched as he collected a gift try.

“He’s lost the ball cold,” a bemused Greg Alexander said on Fox League commentary.

“There’s only one moment I can think of like that and that’s Max Mannix for the Bulldogs at Belmore against the Dragons.

“That’s a play that you’ve never seen, I’ve never seen that.

“I’ve seen players bomb tries, but I don’t think I’ve seen the defence pick the ball up in the in-goal and run 100m and score.”

Former Broncos coach Kevin Walters added: “There was no one near him either. He just had to put the ball down.

“I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Tigers co-captain Jarome Luai praised Bula for his instinctive play to pounce on the error.

“He’s always there, especially when we need him most. He’s a competitor. That’s a big play for us, in terms of the context of the game.”

Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga said he honestly felt sorry for Su’A.

“It should have been 20-16 at half-time. These things happen in a game of rugby league. You don’t what it to happen to you,” he said.

“It’s embarrassing and I’m pretty sure he’s going to try to make up for it in the second half.”
