Kyiv says it’s ready to sign key rare-minerals deal sought by US
Ukraine is ready to sign an agreement that would give the US access to its valuable rare minerals in the hopes of ensuring continued American support for Kyiv in its grinding war with Russia, senior Ukrainian officials say. Ukraine’s economy minister and deputy prime minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, flew to Washington on Wednesday to help finalise the deal, according to two senior Ukrainian officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorised to discuss the matter publicly. Coles on alert for Donald Trump tariff fallout
Coles is on high alert for impacts from US President Donald Trump’s global tariffs as prices on major products in Australian supermarkets start to fall. Coles chief executive Leah Weckert predicts impacts from Trump’s tariffs to be “very minimal”, as the company on Wednesday announced a 3.7 per cent increase in sales over the three months to March. “Are there secondary effects or indirect impacts that could come through? Two former My Kitchen Rules stars who were facing a raft of charges can be identified for the first time, after the woman pleaded guilty to kicking, spitting on and hitting children. Claudean Bernadette Uamaki-Mu and Anthony Michael Mu could only be named as two Channel 7 personalities during their initial appearances at Richlands Magistrates Court, due to a sweeping non-publication order handed down in 2023. Stolen $8000 Pokémon card recovered but assault mystery remains
A Pokémon card thought to be worth more than $8000 has been found but the circumstances behind its violent theft and recovery remain cloaked in mystery. A 38-year-old man told police he was assaulted by a purported buyer when he tried to sell rare collectable cards in a Wollongong car park on Friday night. He said a card worth more than $8000 was stolen at the meeting point at Lake Entrance Road and Shellharbour Road in Warilla about 10.45pm. Model Natalie Marangos threw lamp at ex’s head at busy restaurant
A model and aspiring social media influencer threw a lamp at her ex-lover when she spotted him on a date at one of Sydney’s fanciest new restaurants. Natalie Marangos, 34, assaulted her ex-boyfriend Dean Contos, 37, at Tanuki restaurant in Double Bay just before midnight on 22 February. Mr Contos was dining with another woman when Marangos grabbed a lamp from a restaurant table and hurled it at his face. He sustained facial injuries. Barnacles Backpackers blaze under investigation after body found
Firefighters rushed to Barnacles Backpackers in Bowen, about 50 kilometres north-west of Airlie Beach, about 3.30am on Wednesday. Video showed flames roaring high into the air as officers tried to control the blaze from the ground. They managed to extinguish the blaze within about an hour and a crime scene was declared. It was initially thought all eight people inside at the time made it out without injury but last night police said a further search of the property found a body. A tobacco store in Tullamarine has been firebombed for the second time in eight days, as police investigate the fifth suspicious blaze to occur at a Williamstown ice cream store. Emergency services were called to a fire at a tobacco store on Melrose Dr in Tullamarine about 1.20am on Wednesday. Police believe the offenders used a vehicle to smash through a roller door, then poured an accelerant into the shop and set it alight causing extensive damage to the store. US economy shrinks for first time in three years amid trade war
The US economy shrank at a 0.3 per cent annual pace from January through March, its first drop in three years. It was slowed by a surge in imports as companies in the US tried to bring in foreign goods before President Donald Trump imposed massive tariffs.
